American Wirehairs are low maintenance pets. This breed tends to be very hardy and less susceptible to illness than some other types of cats.

The first American Wirehair was purchased for $50 by Mrs. William O'Shea, who continued to breed the cats. American Wirehairs have been exported to Germany and Canada.
