American Wirehairs are low maintenance pets. This breed tends to be very hardy and less susceptible to illness than some other types of cats.

    American Wirehairs are considered to be the rarest cat breed by numbers registered with the CFA. American Wirehairs were first produced by an accident of genetics in a litter of barn cats. The first American Wirehair was purchased for $50 by Mrs. William O'Shea, who continued to breed the cats. American Wirehairs come from upstate New York. American Wirehairs have been exported to Germany and Canada.
